Audiometry and Noise Assessments

30 years of experience Shifts covered
UK wide
Purpose-built hearing screening units
In-house RCN registered nurse reviews
Highly professional services from specialists but with a friendly approach
Not just carbon neutral,
we are carbon negative

With clients ranging from two to over two thousand personnel, all over the UK, we are specialised in on-site hearing testing for employees and noise assessments, helping employers comply with the noise measurement and hearing health surveillance requirements of the HSE’s Noise Regs. Using our purpose-built mobile units we can provide employee audiometric testing for companies of any size, anywhere, on any shift, and with extensive noise assessment experience over three decades we can provide workplace noise assessments for any type of business.

Granted, we have a slightly jokey company name but that’s the boss here and his deep-seated dislike of ‘solutions’ names, but our audiometry and noise assessment service is extremely professional, with competent people throughout and hearing test and noise measurement clients who have been with us for a long time now - into decades for some. We have clients with a couple of workshop employees through to organisations employing tens of thousands of people, anywhere from Kent to Inverness, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire to Newcastle and King’s Lynn.

We focus on a few things, done well

Screening audiometry

Via several mobile audiometric testing units fitted out to our own design, we offer on-site hearing testing for HSE Noise Regs surveillance. Fast, accurate and reliable service, with nurse review, minimum downtime and at very reasonable costs.

Noise assessments

Our noise assessor has 30 years of experience in measuring noise levels at work. Our assessments include daily average exposures, peak levels, assessment of hearing protection suitability, and a detailed report.

Screening spirometry

Lung function testing for employees exposed to hazardous dusts or fumes. All done on your site in our mobile clinics and all results reviewed by a registered nurse / Occupational Health Advisor. Can be stand-alone or alongside hearing testing.

Noise safety training

Our noise training is delivered by someone with decades of experience in noise safety and in delivering training. Our courses are enjoyable and informative, helping employers meet their regulatory training requirements.

  • The HSE’s Noise Regs require that anyone who works in an area which is over 85 dB(A) has ‘health surveillance’, basically a rather Orwellian way of saying hearing tests.

Sometimes called audiometry or audiometric testing, it is the standard way of assessing hearing levels. The tests compare people’s results against standards expected for them, and for repeat testing can assess rate of change to ensure it is not abnormal.

The hearing health surveillance / audiometry is effectively a safety-net which can ensure the main noise safety precautions in the workplace are working.

  • You can email hello@thenoisechap.com or use the form below.

Just tell us how many people you need appointments for and whereabouts in the country it is and we will send a quote over.

When you want to book in just confirm their shift times and we will draw up a complete set of appointment times for all the hearing tests. Once you are happy with that, if you use them, let us have one of the magic PO numbers which unlocks an accountant’s heart and all is ready to go.

  • ✔︎ On-site specialist personnel - this remains the only way for British Standard-compliant audiometry.

✔︎ Review by an Occupational Health Advisor (registered nurse), before generating the client report.

✔︎ Fast and cost-effective, minimising disruption and lost time.

✔︎ Scheduling done for you - minimum admin work on the client’s side.

✔︎ All shifts covered - no extra charges for evening or night-shift testing.

✔︎ Visual otoscopic health check of the ears - looks for blockages, perforations, etc.

✔︎ Instant results given to the attendee, explaining what it means to them.

✔︎ Clear information on who we recommend needs a follow-up doctor’s review.

✔︎ We can manage that doctor’s review for you or point you in the right direction if helpful.

✔︎ Specific interim recommendations given for all individuals identified as having problems.

  • We will arrive in one of our mobile clinics, park up, plug in, and then each person comes for their test which takes a maximum of 15 minutes per person.

We have a waiting room in the van in case it is raining so no need to lurk outside getting wet.

Once the testing is done the Tech writes their initial report. That goes to our boss/owner who is very experienced and a long-standing member of the British Society of Audiology, and then it goes to our in-house Occupational Health Advisor, a RCN registered nurse. After that final review it then goes to the client.

The report tells you exactly what is needed next (if anything) and if you do require Occupational Physician reviews we can help with that if you wish.

  • You can either complete the form on this page or email hello@thenoisechap.com.

Just tell us how many people (roughly) you have working in the area you want measured (that’s a good guide to the size of the job) and whereabouts in the country you are.

  • We have Class 1 hand-held meters and also a set of wearable dosimeters / dosemeters.

We will use whichever is the most appropriate for the job, and we will give daily noise exposure levels. Sometimes they are calculated from the hand-held meter, sometimes from the wearable, depending on the individual job.

  • A noise assessment doesn’t require anything much from the client on the day and there is no interruption to the work.

When we arrive, we will have a few questions about the working days, shifts, hearing protection policies, etc. then just quickly show us around the area to be measured.

We’ll get on with the measurements and are pretty self-contained from that point.

We will use a combination of hand-held and wearable noise meters as best suits the jobs being assessed.

If you have any critical equipment which is not running at the time, we can get a sample measurement from it if someone can start it up quickly for us.

  • Our noise assessment report is quite comprehensive and includes:

A short summary of the findings which is suitable for circulating to people who don’t necessarily need the full thing.

A set of all the noise levels measured, with daily exposures where appropriate.

An assessment of the suitability of the current hearing protection for the noise levels measured, and suitable alternatives if needed.

A set of other recommendations for things like any engineering or organisational controls to consider, who needs hearing protection, needs for audiometry, etc.

Just wanted to say many thanks for your thoroughly marvellous help with the hearing testing, it’s very much appreciated.”
